Airtel Networks Limited, also known as Airtel Nigeria, is a frontrunner in the Nigerian mobile phone market. Nigeria’s Communications Commission (NCC) said on 30 August 2019 that Airtel Nigeria has 46.8 million subscribers, or 26.8% of the country’s mobile telephone market. Bharti Airtel, of which it is a part, is an African telecommunications company with operations in 14 countries.

Established in 2001, Econet Nigeria is a licensed telecommunications operator in Nigeria (DML). It was the first telecoms service provider in Nigeria, introducing commercial GSM services on August 5, 2001.

Vodacom became the company’s management in 2004. After Vee Networks took over in the latter part of 2004, they changed their name to Vmobile. Since May of 2006, when Celtel purchased Vmobile, the two companies have been partners.

In 2008, another telecoms company called Zain Group spent close to $3 billion to acquire all of Celtel International’s shares. Since being acquired by Zain, all formerly Celtel Africa services now have the Zain name. Airtel Nigeria’s parent company, Bharti Airtel, paid $10.7 billion in 2010 to purchase Zain Group’s Africa division.

Airtel Nigeria is the second most popular Nigerian telecom company, behind only MTN Nigeria. As of July 2019, it is predicted that 32,4 million people in Nigeria use Airtel as their primary mobile internet provider. This amounts to about 46.8 million users, or 26.8 percent of the market share.

Segun Ogunsanya has been the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria’s Airtel Networks Limited since November 2012. He most recently oversaw operations at Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Inc.’s wholly-owned subsidiary, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited.

On May 6, 2021, Airtel announced that C. Surendran would be taking over as MD/CEO of Airtel Nigeria. He will take over for Mr. Segun Ogunsaya as CEO on August 1, 2021. When he was CEO of Airtel India, the company’s income in the country grew at a staggering rate under his direction.
