In Nigeria, we have 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FC, where the president resides.

Under the 36 States, we have over 750 local government areas but this article will be taking a look at the 10 richest local government areas in these 36 States.

1. Lagos Island LGA

Lagos island which is popularly known as Isale-Eko is the richest local government area in Nigeria and it is located in the southwestern part of the country.

This local government has a total population of over 200,000 residents and covers the entire Western half of the Lagos state while the entire Eastern half is under the jurisdiction of Eti-Osa.

Lagos Island is linked with the mainland by three bridges that cut across the Lagoon to the district of Ebute Metta, Lagos. Lagos island is also connected to the neighboring island of Ikoyi and VI.

Lagos Island is usually called the Brazilian quarters of Lagos, and this is because it is mostly inhabited by Brazilians during the slave trade. Now, the Lagos island is mostly inhabited by Nigerians and it is now a commercial-residential area filled with banks, business organizations, and headquarters of different businesses.

Some of the prominent organizations located on Lagos Island are the Tom Jones memorial hall and library which is along Marina Road. 

We also have the cathedral church of Christ, the National house occupied by Shell, former Central Bank Headquarters and Investment house, Bank of industry, and Nigeria Port Authority headquarters.

The Eastern side of Lagos Island is like a ghetto containing the general market, and housing there is very poor since it’s a ghetto. The streets there are filled with young children playing around since they aren’t going to school.

2. Ikeja LG, Lagos

Ikeja LG is the second richest Local Government area we have in Nigeria. Ikeja which is the capital of Lagos state is a well-developed area in the state with a lot of businesses and organizations.

In addition to this, the city is also comprised of residential, and industrial areas which account for its efficient transit system.

Some of the major areas in Ikeja include the Ikeja City Mall which houses the biggest ShopRite store in Nigeria, the busiest airport in West Africa, Muritala Muhammed International Airport Airport, Ikeja, and also the Lagos State Government House

Other areas in Ikeja include Ogba, Maryland, Government Residence Area, Ikeja, Oregun, Ojodu, Opebi, Akiode, Alausa, Agidingbi, and Magodo.

The Ikeja Computer Village is the busiest and biggest computer market in Nigeria and it began operations in the year 1997 as a small market consisting of only 10 shops. The computer village has now grown to a large market with 3000 shops.

Every year, they do the computer village carnival where they call prominent Nigerian musicians. Burma Boy and other prominent musicians have attended the event.

3. Abuja municipal LG, Abuja

The Abuja Municipal is one of the most powerful local governments we have in the country because it is the residential area of King president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Not only does it house the president, but it also houses other prominent politicians like the members of the presidency, the senators, and prominent members of the House of Representatives.

The Abuja municipal local government area is also the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the regional headquarters of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The Local Government Area is characterized by neat, and wide roads, tall skyscrapers buildings, and well-spaced houses.

4. Eti Osa LG, Lagos

Eti-Osa is another rich local government area in Lagos State. Eti-Osa Local government area consists of different Council areas including the Lagos State government.

Before the Nigerian capital was moved to Abuja, the Eti-Osa local government area alongside Lagos Island served as the capital of Nigeria where the president resides.

According to the Nigerian last census, the total population of the residents in Eti-Osa is over 280,000 which is approximately 3% of the total population in Lagos State.

The resident of Eti-Osa is predominantly from the Awori tribe which is a Yoruba subgroup. The Awori is a unique blend of different ethnicities from different parts of the country.

Eti-Osa houses many businesses in Lagos State, and also the beautiful neighborhood which includes the port at Lekki and Victoria Island.

5. Ibeju-Lekki LG, Lagos

Ibeju-Lekki is another prominent local government area in Lagos State and it is located just after the Eti-Osa local government area.

Ibeju-Lekki is popular for housing several estates, Gardens with other recreational centres in the state. Ibeju-Lekki is also known as a commercial trade zone that has a 12 MW independent power plant which is still under construction by the China-Africa lake investment Limited.

6. Uyo LG, Akwa Ibom

Uyo is a Local government area in Akwa-Ibom state and also the capital of the state. The city houses Godswill Akpabio Stadium,IBB way, Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Udo Udoma Avenue, and Edet Akpan Avenue. 

7. Calabar Municipal LG, Cross River

The Calabar Municipal is another rich local government area we have in Nigeria. It is located in Cross rivers state and is surrounded by beautiful places like the Calabar Tinapa, Obudu cattle ranch, and many more.

8. Bonny Island, Rivers

Bonny Island is one of the beautiful places in Rivers state and it is known for its infrastructural development. The roads are 100% tarred and Ferries are the main form of transport to and from the island. 

9. Obio-Akpor, Rivers

Obio Akpor is another local government area in Rivers state and it houses many oil and gas firms with offices.

10. Ibadan Northwest, Oyo

Ibadan is the largest city in West Africa and the first-class developing region in the country having the first skyscraper and first television station in the whole of tropical Africa. Also, the first railway line in Nigeria the Lagos-Ibadan rail has its terminal in this LGA.
